Baulkham Hills Family History Discovery Day

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held what the Church calls a ‘Family Discovery Day’ on Saturday 22 August. The event took place at the Baulkham Hills Church Building and had over 300 people in attendance.

With experienced family history researchers on hand to help, Church members and their neighbors and friends from the community learned how to use online resources to find ancestors and collateral relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins).  Caylee Archibald, a member of the Baulkham Hills Ward (congregation) said of the day, “I liked how you could go to what you want and dodge what you don’t. It’s like you can plan your own day, I was able to learn about the apps and got them downloaded on my phone”.

Sarah McGregor from the Church’s Family History office in Carlingford (which supplies the visual aids and Family Day Discovery Kit to LDS churches in Australia) said, “Family Discovery Days are an excellent way for people to learn family history skills. It is for people of all ages and skill levels.”

“This event allowed family history veterans to learn new skills and newcomers to hit the ground running.The best part is that wards and stakes get to design their own event and teach the skills in their own area. Family History work is all about bringing the family together, even eternally.”

FamilySearch is a free service provided by the Church and is the largest genealogy organisation in the world.
